Geo No is a browser extension that skips or hides YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels from countries you choose. It has no servers, no accounts and no analytics. We do not collect, store, sell or share any personal data.
What is stored, and where
All of the following stays on your device, in your browser's extension storage. It's synced only through your own browser account if you have Chrome Sync turned on.
- Your settings: blocked countries, which sites to filter, skip/blur mode, sensitivity and allowed channels/accounts.
- Your YouTube Data API key, if you add one.
- A cache of YouTube channels and Instagram accounts with their declared country/city and description, so the extension doesn't look the same one up twice.
- Daily counters of how many Shorts and Reels were checked and blocked, shown in the popup.
Network requests
To decide where a Short is from, the extension reads public information about the video you are currently viewing:
- YouTube oEmbed (
youtube.com/oembed): the video's title and channel name. - YouTube Data API v3 (
googleapis.com), only if you add your own API key: the video's title, description, tags and language, plus the channel's declared country and description. - Instagram (
instagram.com), only while you are viewing a Reel there: the same read-only endpoints the Instagram website itself calls, to read the Reel's caption, tagged location and audio name, and the account's name, bio and business city/country. These requests use your existing Instagram session in the browser; Geo No never sees your password, never posts, likes or follows anything, and sends nothing anywhere else.
These requests go directly from your browser to Google or Instagram. Instagram requests are covered by Instagram's Privacy Policy. YouTube requests are covered by Google's Privacy Policy and the YouTube Terms of Service. Geo No's use of YouTube API Services is subject to the YouTube API Services Terms.
Android app
The Android app uses Android's accessibility service to read the text Instagram and YouTube show on screen while you watch Reels or Shorts (caption, account name, audio name, hashtags), and to swipe or cover a video. It only runs inside those two apps. It makes no network requests at all: settings, allowed accounts, daily counters and the last check (shown in the app for troubleshooting) stay on your phone and are deleted when you uninstall it.
Web app
The web app at addester.github.io/geo-no/app stores its settings, your YouTube API key and a cache of channel countries in your browser's local storage. It calls the YouTube Data API with your own key to list Shorts, and plays them with YouTube's embedded player, which is covered by Google's Privacy Policy. Nothing is sent to Geo No.
Permissions
- Access to youtube.com: to see which Short is playing, and to pause, skip or blur it.
- Access to instagram.com: to see which Reel is playing, read its public details, and pause, skip or blur it.
- Access to googleapis.com: to call the YouTube Data API with your key.
- Storage: to save the settings and cache listed above.
Removing your data
Uninstalling the extension deletes everything it stored. You can also remove your API key or allowed channels at any time from the settings page.
